          <Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[The Enlightenment

A film about the birth of the modern world - that extraordinary moment in the 18th century when established beliefs and traditions were challenged by a group of enlightened Scots.

In this documentary, Andrew Marr explains how Edinburgh changed from a filthy, provincial city into a beacon of intellectual thought, led by the brilliance of the philosopher David Hume and the father of economics, Adam Smith.

Their enlightened ideas opened the eyes of people across the world, arguing for a progressive, tolerant society with freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of action. These were ideas which, Marr points out, are just as relevant today as they were more than 250 years ago.
