<Synopsis length='short'><![CDATA[Film historian Matthew Sweet argues that Britain's pioneer film-makers created the language of cinema. His journey through the archive reveals film reels that haven't been seen for over a century. [S]]]></Synopsis>
<Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[Matthew Sweet, author of Shepperton Babylon, displays his passion for the early days of British cinema with this journey through surviving footage, some of it controversial even in that pioneering era - such as film of European bombers attacking New York. Legendary films of the period include The Battle of the Somme, thought to have been watched by around 20 million people.

Matthew visits former studio sites, surviving cinemas from the pre-1929 period and finds out where the pioneers did their work. Contributors include Neil Brand, acclaimed silent film pianist; screenwriter Michael Eaton; British Film Institute archivist Bryony Dixon; and film historians Frank Gray and Ian Christie.

The drama is based around the time in 1957 when 'Babe' Hardy had suffered a major stroke that left him barely able to communicate.
