          <Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[The Brainy Barbarians

Terry reveals that it was not the Romans but the eastern barbarians - the Greeks and the Persians - who were the real brains of the ancient world.

The story begins and ends with a strange lump of rusty metal discovered on the Mediterranean seabed in 1900. It turned out to be a 2000-year-old piece of highly complex engineering, the like of which would not be seen again for another 1500 years. What had happened to halt the progress of ancient know-how? The Romans had happened.

From the great Parthian Empires of the East to their closer neighbours, the Greeks, the Roman world was surrounded by mathematical and scientific brilliance. Tragically, as Terry discovers, all the Romans were interested in was conquest and money.

In the single-minded expansion of their Empire, the Romans buried scientific treasures and wonderfully enlightened societies that are only just now coming to light. [S]]]></Synopsis>

<Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[Returning to Later this week are Bobbie Gillespie's rock and roll revolutionaries, Primal Scream. In over twenty years they've had a career that's seen eighteen hit singles, the first ever Mercury Music Prize and a musical style which continues to inspire bands, old and new. Their eighth studio album, Riot City Blues, is out in June and sees a return to the classic rockin' sound of 1994's Give Out But Don't Give Up. The Kills front-woman, Alison Mosshart, joins the band for Dolls, one of the stand out tracks from the new album.

He's acted, directed, written books and is an established composer but 2006 sees a return to rock and roll for Ray Davies. The Kinks' front-man was responsible for a string of the bands top ten hits, including You Really Got Me and Lola, but released his much-anticipated solo studio album, Other People's Lives, earlier this year. He brings his eclectically English sound to the show this week.

Grammy award-winning country star Rosanne Cash has continued the song-writing tradition passed on to her by her father, Johnny, and has seen a hit-rate of over twenty top forty singles, including eleven number ones, since her debut in 1979. Her latest album, Black Cadillac is a posthumous tribute to her parents and step-mother and has been released to critical acclaim. She'll be bringing her 'Nashville via New York' style to the studio.

Swedish singer-songwriter, Jose Gonzalez's debut album Veneer shot to the top ten on it's release last year and the single Heartbeat made him the signature sound of Sony's 'bouncing balls' advert. This year sees him collaborating with electro-loungers Zero 7 on their new album, The Garden, before he heads out on tour, and he'll also be adding to the Later mix this week. [S]]]></Synopsis>
