<Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[Before Hollywood got in on the act, a small Yorkshire town became the centre of a boom in making films thanks to the work of James Bamforth in the late 19th Century.

This documentary tells the remarkable story of how Holmfirth was wrapped up in the new art form, when Bamforth used his skills as a lantern slide showman to produce some innovative short films. The whole community was involved, with the station manager allowing trains to be scheduled around various takes.

James's son Edwin took over the business, which at its peak produced a film every week. Sadly only a small percentage of the total made survive today. But the legacy goes on - the long-running comedy Last of the Summer Wine has brought Holmfirth back into the spotlight over the last few decades. [S]

Eddie Mair presents the story of how governments spin - and have always spun - their way out of personnel crises: from Profumo, through the multiple scalps of the Thatcher years to more recent cases like Mandelson and Blunkett.

Government insiders and spin doctors reveal the gossip and backroom discussions that often contrast starkly with the public presentation of some of the highest-profile and most embarrassing dismissals in the land. This programme contains some strong language. [S]]]></Synopsis>

3/4. Laurel and Hardy

They are perhaps the best loved comedians from the silent era, and they still enjoy a huge following around the globe. Paul Merton argues that although the pair are remembered more for their talkie features, their silent movie work is just as legendary and helped to refine their act to perfection.

Paul tracks the rise of Stan's career from his Cumbrian beginnings and that of Ollie's until they joined forces in 1927's Duck Soup. Paul also meets silent film accompanist and composer Neil Brand, who comes up with a unique score for one of Laurel and Hardy's best silent films, You're Darn Tootin'.

It gets a premiere at the Pordenone film festival - the biggest silent film festival in the world.

<Synopsis length='long'><![CDATA[1/6. The Birth of Soul

This major documentary series tells the story of the rise of black popular music. Once the party music of an oppressed minority, it is now the biggest single influence on global popular culture today.

It begins with the remarkable story of Ray Charles and how he merged the Saturday night rhythms of the dancehall with the Sunday morning emotion of the church to create a new sound that would become known as soul.

Set against a backdrop of racial segregation, this first programme recreates the heady world of the 1940s and 1950s rhythm and blues scene from which Ray Charles emerged, and also features artists such as Louis Jordan, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Little Richard and James Brown .

Featuring rare and never before seen archive, including a previously unseen interview with the late Ray Charles himself.]]></Synopsis>
